Dear Lukas, Letter Number 6 (Month 6)

Trapped in the Bedroom

Dear Lukas,

Yay! It's still January as I'm writing this letter and Lost comes back tonight. Double yay! At this very moment, I have locked us up in the bedroom (ala Britney Spears, but without the police or paparazzi outside. What's outside the door? A mouse - a disgusting little brown mouse (hereafter known as DLBM), hanging out near the refrigerator. I screamed so piercingly loud that you burst out crying. I'm really sorry! After I called Ninang Margie freaking out and messaged your dad at work, I worked up the nerve to gather my bag, the phones, this laptop and you and ran into the bedroom making loud noises to indicate to DLBM that indeed there were large scary predatory humans in the vicinity. So now, we're safe in here, on the bed and you are simultaneously entertained and frustrated with your soothie pacifier as you use it to scratch your (still) itchy gums. I prayed you would not get hungry until your dad arrived, but no, you had your own agenda and 20 minutes into our safe haven, you cried for your "mik mik."
With you in my arms, I trotted into the kitchen grabbed the water pitcher and formula can and brought them into the bathroom. I took a breath and grabbed the 7 (how utterly inconvenient when you are trying to avoid a run-in with a DLBM) different parts of your bottle and brought those into the bedroom. I then realized that I couldn't make a bottle with you in my arms so I put you down in your crib and you proceeded to cry. I made the bottle and you ate 2 freaking ounces! Anyways, you're okay now and I'm just waiting for you dad to arrive because I'm hungry.

For reasons beyond the DLBM (although it helped to confirm the decision) your father and I have decided to move back with your Lolo Ernie and Lola Aida. Now that you're getting bigger, you need more room and as the days get warmer, you'll have better access to the outdoors at the house rather than up here in our 3 window apartment. Actually when you were still in my tummy, as we got closer to your birthday, I began to feel that this apartment just wasn't gonna be big and airy enough for a growing boy. I hope you like it. Lola Aida says you are happy when you are there but I'm sure she's happier:)

Okay, we are still in the bedroom and you are now lying down still playing with the pacifier. It's funny how you now have other "needs" besides the basic eating, changing, and sleeping regimen you had the first few months. You now have goals unrelated to your basic needs. You have WANTS! Like, you want to do something with that pacifier and you are focused on getting it done even if you cry a bit when you drop it. You just keep at it! You get BORED now. Sometime you'll start crying even when you've had your basic needs met. You want to be entertained now! So for this month, besides the independent sitting, standing with less assistance, and holding your own bottle, let's work on learning to entertain yourself, shall we? Hehe. Don't worry you dad and I still love to entertain you especially with your favorite songs. Today Lolo Ernie discovered that you stop doing whatever your doing when the annoying digital cable commercial comes on. Oh, Lawdy Lawd!

Love you always and forever,
Mama
