Dear Lukas, Month 1
Letter Number 1 (Month 1)
Dear Lukas,
Wow, 28 days and your father and I have not dropped you yet! Although, I admit, I almost did last weekend. Thank goodness you were over the bed as I was putting you in the carrier. Your Papa was there and stuck out his arm in time to keep you from falling. But even if he didn’t, worst case would have been dropping you on the bed – our nice soft comfy bed that you LOVE to sleep on. So I hope you forgive me for that almost-mishap.
On Friday (where I’m beginning this letter), I had just fed you and changed you, and you fell asleep so I put you in the bassinet. I took that opportunity to make myself a pastrami sandwich. Before I could eat it, you began to cry. So I went over to the bassinet to check on you and you had milk drool coming out of your mouth. I picked you up and put you on my right shoulder so you could burp. You always seem to take so long to burp with me. Maybe I’m just too impatient. Anyway, so I put you on my shoulder to burp you and almost immediately, you pick up your head and start looking around! It was if you realized you were home all of a sudden and wanted to have a look around. Not just at the ceiling, I’m talking AROUND the apartment – left, right, up, down. It was the coolest thing. So, I walk you around the apartment and you manage to keep you head up still looking around. I take you from room to room like I’m some realtor and tell you about each room. You are a very aware and curious person even this early. You are amazing and we love you so much. I don’t really remember how we existed before, without you in our lives.
You turn a scary shade of red tomato with purple highlights when you’re angry or maybe just impatient. It’s not AS scary as it was in the beginning and I discovered that if we at least acknowledge your pissy-ness, you calm down – slightly. Despite your sudden color changes, Papa and I know you’re a pretty reasonable kid. You cry with reason. It’s usually because you’re hungry. We then go down a list of possible reasons including: poop or pee change request, gassiness, and something I didn’t know about until I had you – being over-tired or over-stimulated. Most of the time, you’re just hungry. This week you’ve showed your maturity somewhat because now the mobile over your crib is entertaining enough for you that I can leave you there to hang out for more than 5 minutes. You just cry when the mobile stops. Like I said, you’re pretty reasonable. Papa and I can’t wait until you begin to talk because it’s difficult sometimes trying to read your cries. Just the same, we’re glad your cries make sure we don’t forget to feed, change, or cuddle you to comfort.
The days leading up to your first month of life have been busy. On the 18th, we all went out to dinner for Lolo Ernie’s birthday. It was your first time out in public (other than your nearly weekly visits to Lolo Ernie’s and Lola Aida's home, aka home #2)! Papa was a little (ok, a lot) nervous taking you out and I was very excited to show you life outside the apartment. We went to Atlas Park Mall in Glendale and walked around with your stroller while waiting for Auntie Lola Eva and Auntie Lola Marlene to join us. You were asleep the entire time and only awakened slightly for a feeding. Thank you for waiting until Papa and I finished eating!
On Sunday, the 19th, we took you to church! You slept again! And again, Papa was super nervous bringing you out and trying to protect you from other-people-germs that he sped through all the people who wanted to see you. That’s alright; you’ll see them next Sunday.
Love,
Mama
